Self-Service Supermarket Check-Out
Self-service checkout has
become accepted by supermarket shoppers in the U.S. who are embracing the convenience
of scanning and bagging their own groceries. In fact, industry observers believe
that self-checkouts will become more popular than pay-at-the-pump gas stations.
IAS was an early entrant into this market, with
patented technology that enables customers to scan any size order—not just the standard
"Express Lane" 15 items or less that other companies' systems are limited to. IAS's
scanners were installed at U-Check Supermarket in Salem, Utah- the world's first
fully automated supermarket. The results are impressive; all 12 checkout lanes have been self-scan and monitored by one cashier. An automated store employs only 18
people, less than a third of
the number of employees at a traditional supermarket
Now, IAS is pushing the supermarket
technology farther, with more payment convenience for customers;allowing them to
pay by cash, check, or credit and debit cards, without the assistance of a cashier
or clerk. In addition, IAS is poised to introduce a similar self-service, order-and-pay
capability into a new market: fast-food restaurants.
With IAS's new self-cashiering product, a customer
can not only scan in a full cart of groceries, but is able pay for the order by
check, cash, credit or debit card—without the involvement of a store employee. Payment
by check can now be fully automated—a big step toward making supermarket checkout
quicker and easier.
How? IAS has developed
a system that uses biometrics and a digital camera to verify the check-writer's
ID and accept payment. This system, built on IAS's existing high-volume self-checkout
technology, is designed to further elevate the convenience of shoppers, and enable
store managers to focus their employees on service in other areas.
Self Service Checkout Advantages
IAS believes that
its technology delivers several key benefits for supermarket owners, including the
reduction of employees, the ability to automatically balance drawers, and the virtual
elimination of employee shrink, which accounts for more than 50 percent of all shrinkage.
